Hluhluwe iMfolozi Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Restaurant, Self-Catering & Non Self-Catering Accommodation
Accommodation in the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park, KwaZulu-Natal's largest Big 5 Game Reserve, is available at two large camps (Hilltop and Mpila Camps) and at a number of smaller venues. Hilltop Camp is the only one in the Hluhluwe uMfolozi Park that has a restaurant, the camp is located in the northern Hluhluwe sector of the park. All the other camps are strictly self-catering. Hilltop Camp has both self-catering and non self-catering Chalets. All accommodation booked at Hilltop Camp is now on a Bed and Breakfast or Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis, with the option to take a package that includes dinner and or a guided game drive in Hilltop's open game drive vehicles. Alternatively one drives oneself on the public road network.
Hilltop Camp was indeed built on a Hilltop with panoramic views over the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Game Reserve, the distant rolling hills of Zululand, all the way to Lake St Lucia and the Indian Ocean in the far distance. The camp is cooler than the low lying bushveld due to its altitude, air-conditioning has been installed in all chalets. With the lofty thatch ceilings the rooms are cool in summer and warm in winter.
The 4 Sleeper Chalets have two bedrooms, one larger than the other, with a bathroom en suite. The second bedroom has a shower and toilet just outside its door. Then there is a veranda, plus an open plan lounge / dining room / kitchen. Each unit has its own braai (barbecue) There are two styles of 4 bed Chalet, single level and double story.
Some are suitable for wheelchair access.
The 2 Sleeper self catering Chalets have a bedroom with en suite bathroom and then a separate lounge / dining / kitchen which leads off onto a veranda with braai facility (barbecue).
All these units have the necessary basic cutlery, crockery and kitchen utensils for self-catering.
The 2 Sleeper non self catering Chalets consist of a bedroom with a lounging area and veranda. The room has a tea and coffee station and fridge. No cooking permitted in these units. Each has a private bathroom en suite.
The 2 Sleeper Rondavels (Resthuts) have a bedroom with a fridge and necessary cutlery and crockery. The kitchen is remote from the room and is communal, with all necessary utensils, stoves and washing facilities. The bathrooms are also communal and away from the rooms. Self catering guests may utilise the restaurant - I suggest that one books for dinner.
All units accommodate the maximum stated number of persons, irrespective of age.
Conservation levy is payable at Hilltop Camp reception. You will need to present your booking reservation reference number at the entrance gate to the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park. An exit permit will be issued at Hilltop Camp reception on departure, you will need to show this at the gate on exiting. Most Credit cards are accepted at Hilltop Camp.
Hilltop Camp is where guests staying at the Muntulu and the Munyawaneni Bush Lodges need to check in.
There is a pic-nic site at Mapumulo and Siwasamakosikasi both with toilet facility. There is also a toilet at the Memorial Gate. The Centenary Centre, nearer to the uMfolozi Game Reserve, has a take-away, the Rhino Capture interpretation centre, Capture Bomas as well as toilets. There are craft markets at the Centenary Centre as well as at the Memorial Gate.
Guests wanting to visit the uMfolozi sector of the Park may do so - be aware of the distance and timing as guests may not drive themselves in the park after the gate closing times.
There is a backup generator during loadshedding. Loadshedding has caused various utilities to malfunction, in particular air-conditioning units. Most air-conditioning units are not working due to Load Shedding damage.
***Please note that although the water is suitable for bathing and cooking, it is recommended that one does not drink the water and to buy or bring your own supply.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife have decided to implement a ban on visitors bringing firewood into any of their Reserves.

We are only a booking service to secure accommodation at a number of the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife park accommodation venues. We are in no way responsible for the condition of the facilities, which due to severe budgetry cuts from our Provincial Government, has resulted in a lack of general maintenance over the years, with many of the accommodation facilities severely jeopardised and in need of urgent repair or closure. The Park authorities are well aware of this inability to carry out basic necessary maintenance and are endevouring to source the necessary funds which to date have not become available. Far and Wild Safaris has no control over the allocation of units and their condition. Should you choose to visit these venues and subsequently find fault with the accommodation and or service, we are only able to forward your comments to the Park authorities. There is no compensation for this status quo should it not meet your expectation. Please contact ourselves should you require further clarification
